Genny Zero Balance Wheelchair

The Genny Zero is a modern self-balancing electric wheelchair and medical device designed for active mobility in both indoor and outdoor environments. Unlike older Segway PT-based seating systems, the Genny Zero was developed from the ground up as an independent mobility platform for people with motor impairments.

Acceleration and braking are actively controlled by shifting the body's centre of gravity, while the direction of travel is controlled through the steering system. This allows the Genny Zero to combine active body involvement, exceptional manoeuvrability and compact dimensions.

PT Pro provides professional consultation, personal test rides, different Genny Zero configurations, accessories, spare parts and technical service. Upon request, PT Pro can also provide technical information and documentation to support the preparation of an individual funding application with health insurers or other funding bodies.

Genny Zero – Active Self-Balancing Wheelchair

The Genny Zero is a modern self-balancing electric wheelchair and a medical device for people with motor impairments. Unlike earlier Genny generations and older Segway PT-based balance wheelchairs, the Genny Zero is not based on an existing Segway PT platform. Instead, it uses a proprietary self-balancing vehicle architecture developed by Genny.

The manufacturer describes the concept as an Active Power Wheelchair. The user is actively involved in controlling the vehicle: acceleration and braking are controlled by shifting the centre of gravity forwards and backwards, while the direction of travel is controlled through the steering system. Electronic balance technology stabilises the vehicle while driving.

How Is the Genny Zero Controlled?

The Genny Zero uses a fundamentally different control concept from a conventional joystick-controlled electric wheelchair. Forward movement, acceleration, deceleration and braking are controlled by deliberate changes in the user's centre of gravity.

  • Shift the centre of gravity forwards: move forwards and accelerate
  • Shift the centre of gravity backwards: decelerate and brake
  • Steering system: control the direction of travel to the left or right

The combination of active body control, electronic self-balancing technology and steering control provides direct and highly manoeuvrable handling. The user must have the functional abilities required to operate the vehicle safely. Individual suitability should therefore be assessed through a practical trial before regular use.

Who Is the Genny Zero Suitable For?

The Genny Zero is designed for people with motor impairments who have sufficient functional ability to safely control their seating position, body movement and the vehicle itself.

Relevant user parameters and functional requirements include:

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • User weight: 40 to 120 kg
  • Trunk and upper-body control: required for safe active control
  • Upper-limb control: required for safe operation of the steering system

Suitability for the Genny Zero should not be determined by diagnosis alone. The user's actual functional abilities are the decisive factor. A personal test ride and practical assessment are therefore important parts of the vehicle selection process.

Why Is the Genny Zero Described as an Active Wheelchair?

With the Genny Zero, the user is directly involved in controlling acceleration and braking. Controlled movement of the body's centre of gravity is an essential part of the operating concept.

This distinguishes the Genny Zero from electric wheelchairs in which acceleration, braking and steering are controlled entirely by joystick. Active control is not inherently better or worse. The decisive question is which operating concept best matches the user's physical abilities, individual requirements and intended use.

For people with sufficient trunk and upper-body control, the active operating concept of the Genny Zero can be particularly suitable. Where trunk stability is limited, or where fully joystick-based driving is required or preferred, other mobility solutions such as the Hoss R1 may be more appropriate.

Genny Zero for Indoor and Outdoor Use

The Genny Zero is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Its compact dimensions, self-balancing two-wheel technology and effectively zero turning radius allow it to turn on the spot and provide a high degree of manoeuvrability.

According to the current manufacturer documentation, the maximum driving inclination is 11 degrees. The manufacturer also specifies an obstacle height from a stationary position of up to 50 mm. Which surfaces and situations can be negotiated safely in practice depends on factors including the user, vehicle configuration, tyres, surface conditions, weather and the specific driving situation.

The combination of compact dimensions, high manoeuvrability and self-balancing technology makes the Genny Zero a versatile mobility solution for everyday use, leisure activities and suitable indoor and outdoor environments.

Individual specifications or equipment features may vary depending on the vehicle configuration, equipment and national requirements. The specific vehicle configuration and the corresponding manufacturer documentation are therefore decisive.

Genny Zero Basic, Plus and Advance

PT Pro offers the Genny Zero in different equipment and configuration variants, allowing the vehicle to be adapted to the individual requirements of the user.

The PT Pro Basic configuration is available in white or grey and includes low side handles, the standard seat cushion and standard suspension without Öhlins suspension. High side handles, alternative seating solutions, different suspension options or other individual equipment are available depending on the selected configuration.

The appropriate Genny Zero configuration should not be selected on price alone. Important factors include the user's physical abilities, seating comfort, transfer requirements, daily usage, intended environment and individual preferences.

Genny Zero Test Ride and Personal Assessment

A personal test ride and practical assessment are particularly important when choosing a self-balancing wheelchair. Technical specifications alone cannot demonstrate how safely and intuitively an individual user can operate the active control system.

A structured practical assessment can evaluate factors including:

  • seating position and transfer
  • trunk and upper-body control
  • controlled acceleration and braking
  • steering and manoeuvrability
  • starting and controlled stopping
  • handling on different suitable surfaces
  • personal confidence and sense of safety
  • suitability for the user's individual everyday requirements and intended use

PT Pro provides personal test rides, practical assessments and user instruction. Together with the user, PT Pro assesses whether the operating concept and vehicle configuration are appropriate for the individual's functional abilities and requirements.

Genny Zero or Omeo?

The Genny Zero and the Omeo are both active self-balancing mobility solutions, but their control concepts differ significantly.

With the Genny Zero, acceleration and braking are controlled by shifting the body or centre of gravity forwards and backwards. Direction is controlled through the central steering system.

With the Omeo, acceleration and braking are also controlled by shifting the body forwards and backwards. However, two selectable steering modes are available. In body or seat steering mode, lateral body or seat movements steer the vehicle to the left and right. Alternatively, the user can switch to joystick steering. In this mode, lateral seat movement is locked and the joystick controls the direction of travel. Acceleration and braking continue to be controlled through body movement.

The Omeo therefore does not require a central steering column. Which control concept is more appropriate depends on factors including trunk stability, mobility, preferred steering method, transfer requirements and personal preference.

Genny Zero or Hoss R1?

The main difference between the Genny Zero and the Hoss R1 is their control philosophy.

The Genny Zero is an active balance wheelchair. Acceleration and braking are controlled directly through body movement and shifts in the user's centre of gravity.

The Hoss R1 is a self-balancing wheelchair with joystick control. Weight shifting is not required for acceleration, braking or steering. This can make the Hoss R1 particularly relevant for users who want the advantages of a self-balancing mobility solution but cannot safely or consistently perform the active body movements required to operate the Genny Zero.

The Hoss R1 also features an open front area without a central steering column. The most suitable vehicle should therefore not be selected according to a general ranking. The user's individual functional abilities, requirements and preferences are the decisive factors.

Transporting the Genny Zero by Car

With a manufacturer-specified overall width of approximately 62.5 cm, the Genny Zero is relatively compact for a self-balancing wheelchair. However, compatibility with the intended car and loading system should always be checked before purchase.

Important factors include:

  • width and height of the loading opening
  • vehicle loading height
  • available boot or cargo-space depth
  • interior vehicle height
  • ramps or other loading systems used
  • safe load securing during transport

PT Pro therefore recommends checking the Genny Zero together with the specific vehicle and intended loading method rather than assuming that the balance wheelchair will fit into every car.

Genny Zero as a Medical Device

The Genny Zero MD is a medical device designed as an electric wheelchair for people with motor impairments. This distinguishes it technically and from a regulatory perspective from self-balancing leisure or personal transport devices without a corresponding medical intended purpose.

Requirements relating to operation, speed, insurance, registration and use in public areas may differ from country to country. The applicable national regulations and the specific vehicle configuration must therefore always be taken into account.

Funding by Health Insurers, Occupational Accident Insurers or Other Funding Bodies

Where there is an appropriate medical and individual justification, funding for a Genny Zero may be considered by statutory or private health insurers, occupational accident insurers or other funding bodies, depending on the individual case. Any approval or contribution towards the cost is assessed and decided individually by the responsible funding body.

As part of its technical and specialist support, PT Pro can assist with:

  • technical product information
  • personal assessment and practical testing of the Genny Zero
  • structured documentation of the practical assessment
  • technical information relevant to the individual mobility provision
  • documentation to help prepare for a medical appointment or individual funding application

PT Pro does not decide whether funding will be approved and does not replace medical or legal advice. The purpose of this support is to provide clear, factual and traceable documentation of the individual's mobility requirements and practical assessment.

Genny Zero Spare Parts, Maintenance and Technical Service

Long-term technical support is an important part of owning and using a specialised mobility solution. PT Pro therefore supports Genny Zero users not only during vehicle selection and handover, but also throughout continued use.

PT Pro provides services including:

  • consultation and personal test rides
  • practical assessment and user instruction
  • individual vehicle configuration
  • accessories and spare parts
  • technical diagnostics
  • maintenance and servicing
  • repairs

  • support with technical questions

This means Genny Zero users continue to have access to a specialised contact for technical service, maintenance, repairs and spare parts after purchasing the vehicle.

Which Genny Zero Is Right for Me?

The appropriate Genny Zero configuration depends on the individual requirements of the user. Important factors include physical abilities, body height and user weight, seating comfort, transfer requirements, daily usage, typical surfaces, transport requirements and preferred equipment.

PT Pro therefore recommends choosing the Genny Zero based not only on technical specifications or an equipment list. A personal test ride and professionally supported practical assessment provide a much better basis for determining whether the vehicle, control concept and configuration are appropriate for the user and their everyday requirements.

PT Pro supports customers with consultation, test rides, practical assessment, vehicle selection, individual configuration and long-term technical service for the Genny Zero.
