The Omeo is an active self-balancing personal mobility device based on the Segway PT platform. Its defining feature is the patented Active Seat Control (ASC), allowing acceleration, braking and steering to be controlled through body movement and weight shifting.

Alternatively, steering can be controlled through a side-mounted joystick while forward and backward movement continues to be controlled through weight shifting. This provides a highly active control concept with an open front area and no central steering column.

Omeo – Active Balance Wheelchair with Active Seat Control

The Omeo is a self-balancing personal mobility device based on the Segway PT platform. It combines Segway PT balancing technology with a dedicated seating and control system developed by Omeo Technology.

Its defining feature is the patented Active Seat Control (ASC), allowing the rider to control the Omeo through body movement without requiring a central steering column.

How Is the Omeo Controlled?

The Omeo provides different driving modes. Forward and backward movement are controlled through changes in the rider's centre of gravity.

Joystick Mode

In Joystick Mode, forward movement and braking are controlled through weight shifting, while left and right steering are controlled through the side-mounted joystick.

Active Seat Control

In Active Seat Control mode, directional control is also released through body movement.

  • shift forward: move forward and accelerate
  • shift backward: decelerate or reverse
  • shift left or right: change direction

With practice, this allows the Omeo to be driven hands-free using body movement alone.

Open Front without a Central Steering Column

Because steering does not require a central handlebar or steering column, the area in front of the rider remains open.

This can be useful when approaching tables, work surfaces and other people and clearly differentiates the Omeo from many other active balance wheelchairs.

Active Body Control

The Omeo involves the rider's upper body extensively in vehicle control. Acceleration, braking and, in ASC mode, steering are all controlled through centre-of-gravity movement.

This makes the Omeo particularly relevant for users who want a highly active control system and have sufficient trunk control.

Omeo Is Not a Medical Device

Omeo Technology explicitly classifies the Omeo as a personal mobility device, not a medical device.

This distinction is important for regulatory classification, funding and public-road use.

Actual range depends on speed, gradients, terrain, temperature, rider weight, tyres and riding style.

Standard or Off-Road Configuration?

The Omeo can be used with standard tyres or a wider Off-Road Kit.

The standard configuration remains comparatively compact at around 670 mm wide and is more practical for indoor use, doors and paved surfaces.

With the Off-Road Kit, width increases to approximately 890 mm and range is reduced, but the vehicle becomes better suited to varied terrain.

Omeo Indoors

The Omeo can rotate on its own axis, providing excellent manoeuvrability in confined spaces.

The standard version fits many common household doorways. The wider Off-Road configuration may not.

Omeo Outdoors

Omeo Technology positions the vehicle for indoor, outdoor, recreational and off-road applications.

The Off-Road Kit broadens the range of suitable surfaces, although off-road capability should never be interpreted as meaning every surface or gradient is safe to negotiate.

Gradients

Omeo Technology specifies approximately 20–25 degrees uphill and around 30 degrees downhill for riders under 110 kg where sufficient traction is available.

These are manufacturer capability limits under suitable conditions and should not be treated as normal operating targets.

Omeo or Genny Zero?

Both are active self-balancing mobility solutions, but their control systems differ significantly.

With the Genny Zero, acceleration and braking are controlled through weight shifting while direction is controlled through a steering system.

With the Omeo, steering can also be controlled entirely through body movement, enabling hands-free driving without a central steering column.

There is also a regulatory difference: Genny Zero MD is a medical device, while Omeo is classified by its manufacturer as a personal mobility device.

Omeo or Hoss R1?

The main difference is the level of physical involvement.

The Omeo is a highly active system. Forward and backward driving always use weight shifting, and ASC mode also uses body movement for steering.

The Hoss R1 is fully joystick controlled and does not require weight shifting for driving.

Omeo and Other Segway PT-Based Balance Wheelchairs

Like Genny 2.0, Freee F2, AddSeat and Bi-Go, the Omeo is based on Segway PT technology.

However, its patented Active Seat Control and full body-steering capability give it a distinctly different control concept.

Omeo Batteries

The Omeo uses two lithium-ion main batteries based on the Segway PT platform. The current manufacturer documentation specifies 11.4 Ah at 73.6 V for each main battery.

Separate auxiliary batteries supply the stabilising legs, lighting and USB functions.

InfoKey for the Omeo

The Omeo uses a Segway PT InfoKey Controller. The current user manual specifies a CR2430 battery for the controller.

A practical test ride is particularly important because Active Seat Control differs substantially from conventional joystick or handlebar-based systems.

Transporting the Omeo

The standard Omeo weighs approximately 75 kg including its main batteries.

Current manufacturer dimensions include approximately 740 mm length with the footrest raised and 650 mm height with the backrest removed.

Vehicle loading should therefore be planned according to the specific car, loading height and any required ramp or lifting system.

Registration and Public-Road Use

Because the Omeo is not a medical device and can be configured for speeds of up to 20 km/h, legal use must be assessed according to the specific vehicle configuration and applicable national regulations.

Public-road eligibility should never be assumed solely from the Omeo model name or its classification as a personal mobility device.
