PT Pro® – from Segway PT to innovative mobility solutions
The story of PT Pro® began with enthusiasm for what was then an extraordinary technology: the Segway PT. Today, PT Pro combines this many years of technical experience with the consultation, trial and support of modern balance wheelchairs and innovative mobility solutions.
How it all began: enthusiasm for the Segway PT
Michael Möllinger, today’s managing director of PT Pro, first encountered the Segway PT early on in the USA. The experience of riding a self-balancing vehicle, moving intuitively and being able to turn practically on the spot made a lasting impression and sparked his enthusiasm for innovative mobility technologies.
After the end of his professional sports career and his move from Switzerland to Germany, Michael developed a business concept around the then still young field of electric mobility. Among other things, electric motocross motorcycles, e-bikes, electric trial motorcycles and the Segway PT were planned.
The original concept proved too capital-intensive for a company start-up. Michael therefore consistently reduced his plans to a feasible core and started with limited means. The first eleven Segway PT were brought to Hirschau and used for tours at Monte Kaolino.
With his own van, a small budget and a great deal of personal commitment, the company from which PT Pro later developed grew step by step out of the practical tour business.
From the tour business to technical expertise
The daily use of the Segway PT inevitably led to an intensive engagement with maintenance, wear, repair and technical optimisation. Practical experience gave rise to more and more specialised technical knowledge about the Segway PT.
Other tour operators also increasingly turned to the company with technical questions and requirements. This led to our own solutions and accessory products. One example was the development of a front handlebar bag together with Marc Königseder, an experienced buyer and later business partner.
As the company grew, professional structures became necessary: a booking system for tours, an online shop, a reliable spare parts supply and our own workshop for the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of Segway PT vehicles.
From “Personal Transporter” to PT Pro®
The brand name PT Pro® emerged from the term Personal Transporter. In 2015, PT Pro® GmbH & Co. KG was founded.
The PT Pro logo also recalls the technical roots of the company: the raised “T” picks up the characteristic silhouette of a Segway PT.
The Segway PT thus became not only part of the company’s history but also the technical foundation for many of the skills that PT Pro still applies today in diagnosis, repair, spare parts supply and self-balancing mobility.
Segway PT – expertise even after the end of production
Over many years, PT Pro built up extensive practical experience with the Segway PT i2 and Segway PT x2. Even after the end of regular series production, demand for vehicles, spare parts, repairs and technical service remained.
PT Pro therefore continues to work intensively on the long-term technical support of existing Segway PT vehicles. Depending on technical possibilities, this includes, among other things, diagnosis and troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, spare and wear parts, as well as work on Infokey, motors, gearboxes, batteries and electronic components.
In 2021, Marc Königseder sold his company shares to Michael Möllinger. Since then, PT Pro has been run entirely by Michael Möllinger.
The next step: balance wheelchairs and innovative mobility
From many years of working with self-balancing vehicle technology, an increasingly important new focus developed: mobility solutions for people with physical impairments.
At first, the support of older balance wheelchairs based on the Segway PT platform played an important role. The existing technical experience with Segway PT components, diagnosis, repair and spare parts provided a valuable foundation for this.
As the market developed, new vehicle concepts were added. Modern balance wheelchairs today differ considerably in platform, operation, physical requirements and area of use. PT Pro therefore does not regard these vehicles as a single product group with identical operating logic, but differentiates between the respective mobility and control concepts.
Genny Zero, Hoss R1 and Omeo – different concepts for different requirements
Today, various self-balancing mobility solutions are part of the PT Pro portfolio.
The Genny Zero is a modern, active self-balancing wheelchair and a medical device. Unlike older Segway PT-based systems, the current Genny Zero is based on an independent self-balancing vehicle architecture developed by Genny. Acceleration and braking are controlled actively through body and weight shifting, while the direction of travel is determined by the steering.
The Hoss R1 follows a different concept. The self-balancing wheelchair is controlled by joystick and requires no weight shifting for accelerating, braking or steering. Its open front area does without a central steering column. The import of the Hoss R1 into Germany is carried out by My Frankie GmbH as the initial or general importer. PT Pro is second importer, wholesaler and dealer for the Hoss R1 in Germany, is building up the sales structure and handles consultation, trial, sales and long-term technical support.
The Omeo is an active self-balancing mobility solution based on the Segway PT platform. Acceleration and braking are controlled by shifting body weight forwards and backwards. Two switchable options are available for steering: body or seat steering, or joystick steering. The joystick is used exclusively for steering and not for accelerating or braking.
The portfolio is complemented by older Segway PT-based balance wheelchairs and other innovative mobility solutions. These also include the Freedom One Life as a four-wheeled electric wheelchair and thus as an independent vehicle concept outside self-balancing two-wheel technology.
Not every vehicle suits every person
With the increasing specialisation in innovative mobility solutions, the consultation at PT Pro has also evolved. What matters is not a diagnosis alone, nor the question of which vehicle offers the most functions technically.
The focus is on the user’s actual functional abilities, physical requirements, personal needs and intended area of use.
That is why personal consultation, test drives and practical trials are central components of vehicle selection at PT Pro. The aim is to compare different mobility concepts in a transparent way and to assess together with the user which solution may be individually suitable.
Consultation, trial and long-term technical service
PT Pro does not regard the handover of a vehicle as the end of the customer relationship. Especially with specialised mobility solutions, spare parts supply, diagnosis, maintenance and repair are decisive for long-term and reliable use.
That is why PT Pro today combines several areas of expertise: consultation, test drives and trials, individual vehicle configuration, instruction, accessories and spare parts, technical diagnosis, maintenance, repair and long-term technical support.
This combination of practical vehicle experience, workshop expertise and individual mobility consultation characterises PT Pro to this day.
PT Pro® today – experience meets innovative mobility
What began with eleven Segway PT and tours at Monte Kaolino has grown into a specialised company for balance wheelchairs, innovative mobility solutions and Segway PT technology.
The technologies have changed and the product portfolio has grown. The basic idea, however, has remained: to understand extraordinary mobility solutions, try them out in practice, master them technically and support customers over the long term, even after the purchase.
PT Pro® stands for specialised mobility, technical experience and individual solutions – from its roots in the Segway PT to modern balance wheelchairs and innovative mobility concepts.
